Third-party administrators are specialized administrative services companies that perform administrative services for health plans, including adjudication and payment of claims. Administrative costs, as a percentage of claims paid, are lower for TPA's than non-specialized third party administrators, like commercial carriers but usually higher than the costs incurred by employers who administer claims in-house.
